Based on the beloved Christmas movie, MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET is a big brassy Broadway musical with a heart. Funny, warm, tuneful, and inspirational, the show was written by Meredith Willson, creator of The Music Man musical. Kris Kringle—a jolly, kind man who claims that he is the real Santa Claus—has to prove his claim in court and teach his cynical neighbor and her daughter to believe in the goodness and love of Christmas. This is an unforgettable musical version of the classic Christmas tale.

Major stock market indices are at or near all-time highs, The Federal Reserve successfully managed a “soft-landing,” avoiding a recession, bringing inflation rates to “targeted” levels, and subsequently cut interest rates, a harbinger of increased economic growth. All indicators point to the economy as being in “good” shape. However, there are loud complaints that some commodities, most notably food and gasoline prices, are still too high, and that wage growth has lagged, thus projecting the perception of lingering high inflation.

Join us when Steve Rick, Director and Chief Economist at TruStage (formerly CUNA Mutual Group), answers to these and many more economic and financial questions

Steve’s primary responsibilities at TruStage includes conducting strategic research, analysis, and forecasting of the financial services industry with special emphasis on the consumer and credit union markets.

His forecasts serve as a starting point for the strategic planning process and help to create a clear understanding of the underlying trends and links between the general economy, the financial services industry, and policy owners. Steve publishes the Credit Union Trends Report, a monthly “pulse check” on the economic state of the credit union movement. He has authored a textbook on asset-liability management for credit union executives.

Steve is one of our most popular presenters, so this promises to be an enlightening and entertaining session on our economy.

Pottery is made by forming a clay body into objects of desired shape and heating them to very high temperatures which induces reactions that lead to permanent changes including increasing the strength and rigidity of the object. Much pottery is purely utilitarian, but some may also be regarded as ceramic art.

Have you ever wondered what it is like to work with clay to “throw a pot” or hand-build a vessel?  Now’s your opportunity!

Donzghu Pottery Studio LLC hosts groups to experience working with clay. Prior skill is not needed.

Join us for a fun and creative afternoon. You will have the opportunity to experience throwing on a wheel and hand-building. Your pieces will then be finished, fired, and ready for pick-up in approximately 4 weeks.

You may just discover that you want to dive into the world of ceramics and unleash your creativity!

Class is limited to 15 participants. Register early.  If greater interest, activity will be repeated at a future date.

Please note that clay can be messy, wo it is recommended wearing clothes that you don't mind getting dirty!

    This is a self-drive activity.

    Cost

$67 per person and covers all class fees, firing your creations, and two take home projects.

We will start our day with a stop at the Sheboygan Area Visitor Center to stretch our legs and refresh. Located inside the Visitor Center is the Science on a Sphere (SOS) exhibit, a suspended spherical screen projecting online data sets transforming it into a giant animated planet.

After a short ride, we will visit the John Michael Kohler Arts Center (JMKAC). The John Michael Kohler Arts Center is known for promoting the understanding and appreciation of the work of self-taught and contemporary artists through exhibitions and commissioned works of art.  Founded in 1967, JMKAC has preserved, studied, and exhibited artist-built environments, earning a worldwide reputation.  The Arts Center’s downtown Sheboygan facility includes eight galleries, two performance spaces, a café, a museum shop, and a drop-in art-making studio.

Then we are off to visit the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts (WMQFA) and lunch. The Museum, located just east of historic downtown Cedarburg, is dedicated to educating the public about the artistic, cultural, historic and social importance of quilts and fiber arts. The museum’s roots extend back to 1988. Since then, the museum has documented over 8,000 quilts. In addition to quilt documentation, the WMQFA collects and displays important historical fiber arts.

After completing our visits, we are headed home. As always, the trip will include a surprise stop during the day!

If navigating your health insurance benefits feels like finding your way through a maze, you're not alone. Many of us are not trained to navigate the complexities of our health care system. As university and state employes in Wisconsin, we have a valuable benefit: using accumulated unused sick leave credits to cover health insurance costs in retirement. But, when sick leave credits run out, what happens?

Join us for a discussion of navigating the complexities of our health care system with a panel of experts on the topic of what to do when sick leave credits run out.

Adam VanSpankeren, Outreach Program Manager at UW-Madison Division of Extension, will discuss accessing health insurance plans and explain the services of Covering Wisconsin, coveringwisconsin.org, a non-profit organization that provides free navigator services to connect people with health insurance.

Joining the panel will be several ETF staff members. Arlene Larson, Federal Health Programs and Policy Manager and Tricia Sieg, Pharmacy Benefit Program Manager will be Joining the discussion on sick leave policy questions. Tom Rasmussen, the Life and Dental Insurance Program Manager will be available to address Life Conversion, and a staff person from ETF’s Member Services Bureau, who can explain the nuts and bolts of sick leave administration.

If you have preliminary questions for the speakers, please email them in advance to program coordinators Rick Daluge at rhdaluge@wisc.edu and Don Miner dlminer655@gmail.com by Thursday, February 6.

NOTE:  This is a hybrid seminar -- in-person and virtual via Zoom.  Additionally, the session will be recorded and posted on the UWRA website.  When registering, please indicate how you will attend (in person or virtually).

Just 55 miles south of Madison, is a gem of a city. Beloit is an active and vibrant community and the scene of our next great adventure!

Since its inception, Beloit has seen nearly 180 years of American history unfold. The town played a role as a way station on the Underground Railroad and actively participated during the Industrial Revolution, thanks to the ingenuity of its citizens. Fast-forward a century to find Beloit’s workforce helping to meet production demands during WWII. During this time, the invention of Korn Kurls made big waves in the food industry. Innovation is still thriving in Beloit; only now, there’s a little more fun involved. Tech-savvy, forward-thinking businesses are building their enterprises in the little town that could.

We begin our day’s adventure with visits to two museums on the Beloit College campus. Beloit College was chartered by a group of educated, innovative New Englanders in 1846—two years before the Wisconsin territory became a state. The collections at the Logan Museum of Anthropology are central to the curriculum of Beloit College and serve as a student laboratory and center of experiential learning. More information can be found at: About the Museum • Logan Museum of Anthropology • Beloit College

The next campus stop is a visit to the Wright Museum of Art. Established as a teaching museum in 1894 the museum is a space for experiential learning through a critical engagement with art – one that is visual, tactile, and intellectual. Students assist in curating many of the exhibits and engage in background research and help write the wall texts. They also help design the exhibit layout, frame and hang the artwork, and create marketing and educational materials. The Wright Museum holds approximately 6,000 works of art in its permanent collection. Significant collections include American Impressionism, Modernist paintings, a collection of 19th century plaster casts, German Expressionism, and Japanese Modern prints. More information can be found at Wright Museum of Art • Beloit College

Following lunch, we are off to discover more of what Beloit offers. We’ll explore other small business boutiques and stores while discovering downtown Beloit including Vintage Bliss—Found, Rescued, Reloved a leading antique and home decor store featuring the area's most talented vendors of repurposed items, vintage furniture, and more. And then there is Henry Dorrbaker’s …Beloit’s newest entertainment hotspot! The vibrant hangout blends nostalgic vibes with modern entertainment, making it perfect for everyone. The venue features duckpin bowling – a fun twist on traditional bowling with smaller balls and pins – mini golf, vintage arcade games, delicious food and drinks, and so much more. It’s the perfect way to spend a cold winter day inside!

As always there will be a ‘surprise stop’ along the way!

In April, the thoughts of UWRA members turn to pensions because that is when we hear an annual report on last year’s performance and the future prospects of the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS).

Our speakers are the leaders of the State of Wisconsin Investment Board (SWIB), which manages the investment portfolio of the WRS, and the Department of Employee Trust Funds (ETF), which administers retirement, insurance, and other benefit programs for around 650,000 active and retired state employees. This detailed annual report gives us insight into the policies and practices that govern the management of WRS and, importantly, income projections that are helpful in planning our personal finances.

Edwin Denson joined SWIB in 2018 as managing director, asset and risk allocation. He was appointed executive director/chief investment officer in April 2021. Before joining SWIB, Edwin was managing director, strategic tilting, at Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB). Prior to joining CPPIB in 2013, Edwin spent 13 years in asset allocation, currency, and risk management as a portfolio manager at William Blair & Co., managing member at Singer Partners LLC, and managing director and head of asset allocation at UBS Global Asset Management. Earlier in his career, he was an economist at Lehman Brothers, Primark Decision Economics, and Putnam Investments, and he also briefly managed a commodity trading adviser and a quantitative equity strategy. Edwin holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Cornell University and a PhD in economics from Northwestern University.

Rochelle Klaskin, Deputy Executive Director and Chief Administrative Officer, joined SWIB in 2015 as its chief legal counsel before becoming deputy executive director/chief administrative officer. Throughout her more than 20-year career, she has led and advised organizations on board governance and legal matters, daily operations, and strategic transitions and planning. Prior to joining SWIB, she was a shareholder in the corporate practice group at the law firm Godfrey & Kahn, S.C., and she served as the managing partner of the firm’s Madison office. She earned her law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law and a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Todd Mattina, Head Economist, Asset & Risk Allocation CIO, joined SWIB in early 2023 and is responsible for taking a broad view of economic conditions in developing, recommending and implementing SWIB’s asset allocation and other policies for allocating the investments of the fully funded Wisconsin Retirement System. Monitoring capital market conditions and maintaining valuation models, he will support the agency’s investment divisions and determine how best to leverage economic policy to address opportunities, risks and challenges.

The Wisconsin Department of Employee Trust Funds (ETF) is the state agency administering retirement, insurance, and other benefit programs for active state and local employees and for retirees participating in the WRS.

John Voelker, ETF Secretary, will provide projections for future Core and Variable fund annuity adjustments, and highlights of the design elements that keep the WRS strong and fully funded. He was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Dept. of Employee Trust Funds in July 2014. Immediately prior to his appointment the served 11 years as the Wisconsin Director of State Courts. During his 22 years with the court system, he also served as the Assistant to the Chief Justice and as a Senior Policy Analyst. A native of Menasha, Wisconsin, he holds a Bachelor’s degree from UW-Oshkosh.

    This presentation will be recorded.

If you have preliminary questions for the speakers, please send to Program Coordinators Tom Eggert at tleggert@wisc.edu and Sandi Haase at sandi.haase@wisc.edu by Thursday, April 10.
