Remembering the Holocaust

Anywhere we look around the world, the United States included, we come face to face with violence and atrocity. The history of world events spares few countries from stories of human slaughter. People and institutions are in desperate need of leaders who are motivated by an awareness of human suffering and a commitment to safeguarding human life. “Never forgetting” involves remembering courageous people in history who stood against violence and advocated for the dignity and protection of all.

The Connections Committee thought this would be a good time to recall some of the lessons we have learned from the past. We invite you to a Holocaust Remembrance Day lecture by UWRA member Robert Skloot, who is a student of Holocaust drama. Professor Skloot will present a talk on Raphael Lemkin (1900-59), who coined the word genocide, and his heroic efforts to persuade the international community to recognize the existence of genocide and declare it a crime to be prevented and, when in evidence, punished. His play about Lemkin has been read around the U.S. and internationally since it was written in 2006. Please join us on April 12, the date that commemorates Holocaust Remembrance Day in the United States.

Food pantry contributions 

The food pantry recipient for this program will be First United Methodist Church. Both cash and checks made payable to that organization will be accepted.

Capitol Lakes parking

Parking is available in the ramp across the street, which can be accessed from Washington Place, a small side street across the street from the entrance to 333 West Main Street. When you enter the ramp, push the blue button and take a ticket. Proceed to the upper “S” level and park in a space labeled for Capitol Lakes. Take the ticket inside and have it validated at the MainGate reception desk in the lobby after the program. It is valid for only 30 minutes after it is validated. When leaving the ramp, insert the ticket with numbers first and black strip on the right.

Registration

Registration Advance registration is required. If you are not registered in advance, you may not receive handouts. Contact the Association office (see below) by April 5. Members are invited to bring a guest, but the guest needs to be registered.
