What do Clydesdales, cold tolerant grape wines and the birthplace of the GOP have in common? They are all located in Ripon, Wisconsin – just an hour and half drive from Madison.

Larson’s Famous Clydesdales, the only show of its kind in the Midwest, is a 90-minute guided tour with a short grandstand performance in the middle. See these gentle giants up close and pet a recent newborn (200 pounds at birth.) Tour the ranch and view the trucks, trailers, harnesses and equipment that are the accouterments to a performing horse show.

Visit the Birthplace of the Republican Party where a group of Riponites gathered on a cold evening in 1854 to form a new anti-slavery party. They became the first “Republicans” in the Union. The Birthplace also known the “Little White Schoolhouse” has been restored to represent, as closely as possible, how it might have appeared on that historic night in 1854. Tour this National Historical Site and participate in an interpretive program that reviews local and national events of the 1850s that led to Ripon’s role in creating national political history.

Vines & Rushes Vineyard and Winery is located four miles north of Ripon. Their focus is on growing and using cold tolerant grape varieties that are capable of surviving Wisconsin’s frigid winters to make quality wines.

Tour and Lunch: We will tour the vineyards and the winery – then do a wine tasting and have a Neapolitan style wood-fired pizza buffet lunch. Craft Beer or Root Beer will be available for those not wishing to participate in the wine tasting (indicate on registration form.)

(University League and Plato members may register if space is available.)
